I went to a small college. So, my friends were sort of chosen for me. They just so happened to be people who had the same classes in the same building as I. We were all music majors.
This is how I met an ex-Catholic who was a witch into the Wicca occult. One of her favorite book series was the Chronicles of Narnia.
One day I informed her that it was a Christian series. Her brow sort of furrowed for a bit. She just didn’t believe me. I told her about Aslan and how the White Witch killed him on the stone table until he rose again. In the same way Jesus was crucified and resurrected on the cross. Her eyes got real big. She didn’t even argue with me. She was in such shock that one of her favorite book series was Christian.
How much of the book’s philosophies had she taken inside herself? How many had become her own? And they were all pointing her towards Christ!
Well, in an opposite sort of way… this is how I felt after looking deeper into Myers Briggs or MBTI.
Where did Myers Briggs Come From?
Their website says it was started by two people, Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers. Isabel’s husband, Clarence Myers is also cited to be a great influence.
The first red flag is when the name of Carl Jung shows up. He published a book the mother and daughter read. It had been published all the way back in 1921. It was called Psychological Types.
The website continues to say:
“Briggs and Myers thought Jung’s work was so useful that they wanted to make his ideas accessible to a wider audience.”
Who is Carl Jung?
He grew up in a Christian home and later fell in with the occult. He was also a Psychiatrist. He even spent 7 years collaborating with Sigmund Freud, though they broke apart due to different takes on psychology.
Here is what Wikipedia says about Jung’s spirituality:
“Jung’s work on himself and his patients convinced him that life has a spiritual purpose beyond material goals. Our main task, he believed, is to discover and fulfill our deep, innate potential. Based on his study of Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Gnosticism, Taoism, and other traditions, Jung believed that this journey of transformation, which he called individuation, is at the mystical heart of all religions. It is a journey to meet the self and at the same time to meet the Divine.”
So, he was a universalist.
Here is what Jung says himself:
“Every good quality has its bad side, and nothing that is good can come into the world without directly producing a corresponding evil. This is a painful fact”
Carl Jung also believed in Duality.
Duality is best defined by the yin yang symbol from Eastern spirituality. There is a good and evil in all of us. One cannot live without the other. You must find balance with these things and from that become a god.
It’s genesis can be found, well in the book of Genesis 3
Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.
He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Satan’s first temptation is to open Eve’s eyes so that she will “be like God, knowing good and evil”.
All forms of the Occult teach the same lie. Through balance of good and evil, god-hood can be achieved.
MBTI and Duality
MBTI is a soft form of duality. It doesn’t go so far as to tempt you into becoming a god. It does point out that everything must have an opposite.
Introvert vs Extrovert
Sensing vs Intuition
Feeling vs Thinking
Perceiving vs Judging
Thinking in this way, well it means you are thinking in the same terms as occultic figures such as Carl Jung.
You are becoming a believer in duality.
Biblical Truth vs the Lies of Duality
This is why the bible doesn’t match up with MBTI. In the bible we do not have an excuse for our sins. God calls us out of our leanings and our comfort zone. He calls us to go against the natural leanings of this fallen world.
We aren’t gods or little gods (as some in the Word of Faith movement say). Wow! Word of Faith preachers are also of the occult! Imagine that!
There is evil in our hearts. We are sick and fallen creatures in need of a Savior. This means, no balancing it out. Forget your personal views on what is good and what is evil. Turn to Jesus and find the truth in humility and understanding.
Evil must be purged by Jesus, not balanced by our flesh.
If your MBTI leanings call you a technical thinker and you have hurt your brother in Christ, God calls you to empathy and feel his side of things. Follow the golden rule and do unto him what you wish to be done to you (Matthew 7:12)
By the way, this verse is the antidote to narcissism (but that’s a post for another time).
You can’t hold up your pristine MBTI card and say, “Sorry not sorry. I’m a thinker not a feeler. Bye!”
If your leanings and personality traits cause you to sin. Cast them away and lean on Christ!
Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
The true test we take is examining ourselves in comparison to the Word of God. Read your bible.
2 Corinthians 13
5 Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test! 6 I hope you will find out that we have not failed the test. 7 But we pray to God that you may not do wrong—not that we may appear to have met the test, but that you may do what is right, though we may seem to have failed. 8 For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. 9 For we are glad when we are weak and you are strong. Your restoration is what we pray for. 10 For this reason I write these things while I am away from you, that when I come I may not have to be severe in my use of the authority that the Lord has given me for building up and not for tearing down.
Carl Jung ran from God. He listened to other spirits. Just as Eve and Adam’s fall, we too can be caught away by the whispers of the flesh and the devil.
1 Timothy 4
Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 2 through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, 3 who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.
